As you may know, Referata (our host) has been hacked. Fortunately, the hacker doesn't seem to have malevolent intentions. They're not trying to delete anything, they just want to get Referata's attention so they can upgrade their version of MediaWiki. So, hopefully, this won't last long. Unfortunately, the Referata peoples don't seem very active, so it might take a while for things to get back to normal. If the wiki does return to normal, the first thing we should do is back up everything somewhere, just in case something like this happens again. Branderson suggested Internet Archive, which is a good option, except each of the couple thousand pages would need to be archived individually. On a wiki, however, you can import pages from other wikis automatically. So we can create a new wiki on a new hosting site and import all content there, then lock that wiki so no one can edit it. (We don't even have to use a good hosting site, since it's just an emergency backup, and we can always re-import it to a better site if the need arises.) If the wiki doesn't return to normal, we'll start anew like we did with the Tapatalk situation. It's difficult to find a hosting site with a similar layout and features to Referata. One alternative is MediaWiki (the software used for Referata and the Homestar Runner Wiki). It's free to download, but you have to pay to get a domain name. So if anyone finds out how to get a free domain name or something, let me know. Another alternative is ShoutWiki, which is free, but it's less customizable and content can't be imported as easily. (Here's a test I made.)For now, I guess we'll just have to wait it out. Forwards.

Update! Some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the celebimail URL is back up, and I just downloaded the entirety of the wiki onto my computer, contained within a single 5 MB XML file. Now we don't have to worry about losing all our stuff. The bad news is that I can't access the site settings, so I can't change the logo or anything. I'll try asking Referata about it, but don't expect a prompt reply.

If we do go for straight up MediaWiki, there are free domain options like .ga and .ml, but they may require regular traffic. (I know for a fact .tk has that stipulation, so that's why I didn't mention it, but that's also free.) So, there's that.

I contacted the Miraheze wiki hosting site. Fortunately, it is possible to import content from other wikis, so we can use that for the new one. However, I think we should wait a couple weeks before creating it, so we'll know whether it'll be a complete replacement or a mere emergency backup.

Okay, this is getting kinda weird. On my computer, the fanstuff2 URL redirects here, and the celebimail URL makes me download a file. But on my phone, both URLs work just fine. I'm not sure what's going on here, or what the difference is between my computer and my phone. So, I have a question for all you guys: what happens when you visit both URLs on all of your devices?

Currently on both my phone and computer, both URLs load the wiki properly (though the logo's missing and the page title is "Celebimail" on both). Weird that it would be so inconsistent. Glad we have a backup.

I tried going to other pages besides the main page on my computer, and it turns out those pages work fine. It's just the main page that makes weird things happen. And it's only the HRFWiki2 — all the other Referata sites I go to work fine as well. Ordinarily I would just ask Referata about it, except... it might not be worth it. You see, I've got some bad news. I tried uploading the logo, but now it counts it as part of the 100 MB of image space (which we surpassed), so I can't upload it. So maybe we should just move somewhere else. All our pages would be imported, and we wouldn't have to deal with as many technical difficulties or image limits, and we would have a logo. It would be a lot less work than the Tapatalk-ProBoards move, since we won't have to start fresh. What do you think?

Anyone else have an opinion?

On the one hand, moving to a new wiki host (probably Miraheze) would solve most of our problems. On the other hand, it's kind of drastic. But on the other hand, we have no logo, I can't access the main page for whatever reason, and it's kinda slow. On the other other hand, though, we can just ask Referata about it, or wait it out. But on the otherest hand, Referata might not respond, and we've already waited it out for over a week. And in addition to the new problems, there are also the old ones, like the image restriction. I'm slightly leaning toward a new wiki, so that's 1½-0. Anyone else have a say in the matter? SRMX12? rennuR? MJ? Raster? Other peoples? I want to be sure everyone agrees before we do (or don't do) this drastic measure. Pros of Miraheze:
- No image restrictions, as far as I'm aware (including the logo)
- Runs the most recent version of MediaWiki, with HTTPS URL
- Loads faster
- More active help
- Less technical difficulties
- More features
- A fresh change of pace
| Cons:
- Referata is still functional
- It's more familiar
- A lot of work would be involved
- Like I just said, it's a very drastic decision

Put in my vote for moving to Mirahze. Dearly as I love our Referata wiki, the pros outweigh the cons, especially if Referata doesn't get better anytime soon. This way we can have a hrfwiki2 URL to match the forum, and it seems like there are other things we could do better if we start fresh. And like you've said, it's not really starting fresh—we've still got all our content. Maybe this change of pace will motivate me to get moving on some of my wiki-projects I haven't touched in a while.

Well, now it's 3-0. I suppose that's as close to a consensus as we're ever going to get. So I guess we'd better get started! Operation HRFWiki3 is underway! ('Cept it won't actually be called HRFWiki3, since it still has all the same content. I just thought it sounded cool.) I'll create the new wiki soonish. The old one will be locked and turned into an archive, with a link on the main page to direct people to the new one.

I requested the new wiki to be created at hrfwiki2.miraheze.org! Now it's only a matter of hours before they respond!
